Celebrating 20 Years of Helping Medically Fragile Children

Equipment and Support for Those in Need

NEW View Video Remix!>

The needs of Georgia’s medically fragile children are becoming even more critical. The “insurance gap” between what is deemed medically necessary for a medically fragile child and what is actually covered by their private insurance or Medicaid, continues to widen and be impacted by stated and federal budget restraints.

This directly impacts the quality of life and rehabilitation potential for children with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, genetic disorders and traumatic injury. Our foundation works to bridge this gap between medical necessity and humanity. The Foundation is often the last hope for families devastated by the financial, emotional and physical toll of caring for their special-needs child.

Grants Program

Through this initiative, the Foundation “grants” equipment for a medically fragile child based on medical necessity as determined by the child’s physician or therapist. Examples of assistance provided in this program include a wheelchair lift installed in a family's van, toileting systems, lifting systems, bath chairs and specialized car seats. The Foundation pays directly for the equipment and funds are not given directly to families. The average grant is approximately $1,200 depending on the type of equipment.

Loaned Equipment

The Foundation maintains an inventory of specialized equipment that can be loaned to a child's family for as long as there is a need. We have developed this program using both donated and purchased equipment. An Advisory Committee comprised of physicians, nurses, therapists and social workers has helped us develop guidelines and safety protocols for each piece we share. Examples of loaned equipment include: prone standers for increasing leg and hip strength; positioning chairs that allow the child to sit for extended periods for play or study, strollers, feeder seats and therapy benches. We also have a fleet of All Terrain Wheelchairs to share with families for vacations and schools for field trips. Our administrative costs are kept low through the generosity of corporate sponsor Mobility Designs, which inventories, maintains and delivers this equipment for the Foundation across the region.

Partners Program Launched--First Deadline April 30, 2010

Fragile Kids Foundation initiated a new program in 2010 to support our many partner agencies with equipment to be shared by multiple children;equipment such as ramping, seating, therapy bikes, rehabilitative equipment assistive technology and other items the agency is challenged to secure. 501(c)3 organizations may apply for equipment and supply aid for respite programs, special needs schools, day camps for medically fragile children and other charitable programs serving medically fragile children in a group setting.

Requesting Assistance

The parents or legal guardians of any medically fragile child age 21 or younger, a legal U.S. citizen, whose primary legal residence is in Georgia may apply for assistance.

Applications may be obtained online or requested by calling the Foundation at 770.951.6111

How Decisions are Made Regarding Assistance

The Medical Review Committee, composed of physicians, nurses and physical therapists, reviews each application and makes grant allocation based on the medical necessity, the therapeutic and quality of life value and importantly, availability of funds from our kind donors. The Foundation reserves the right to deny, or limit assistance based solely on its subjective judgment.
